About Cairn Shadow Press

Cairn Shadow Press is a limited liability corporation founded in 2019.

The press mission statement articulates a dedication to publishing literature related to the environment of the Pacific Northwest and its people.

Press founder is Timothy Pilgrim, a native of Montana and emeritus associate professor of journalism at Western Washington University.

In addition to numerous academic articles, Pilgrim has published hundreds of poems in poetry and literary journals, magazines, anthologies and other periodicals.

Pilgrim authored Mapping Water (Flying Trout Press), a book of poems, in 2016.

Also, Pilgrim, who prefers no pronouns, is featured along with Paul Piper and Chuck Luckmann in Bellingham Poems, published in 2014 by Flying Trout Press.

Pilgrim’s latest book is Seduced by metaphor: Timothy Pilgrim collected published poems.

Pilgrim received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Washington.

In addition, Pilgrim has earlier degrees, an M.A. in English from the University of Montana (Missoula) and a B.S. in secondary education from Western Montana College (Dillon). At the University of Montana, Pilgrim was a graduate assistant for Lois Welch, wife of novelist and poet James Welch. Richard Hugo was a faculty member at the time.

Cairn Shadow Press also features the editorial and printing technology expertise of Carolyn Dale, a Seattle native, who has worked as a journalist, editor and university professor and is now writing novels, short stories and essays.

Dale taught writing and editing courses and advised student publications for nearly 30 years at Western Washington University, where she is an emeritus associate professor of journalism. 

She authored a conceptually-based journalism editing text, Fearless Editing: Crafting words and images for print, web and public relations (Pearson), in 2006. The book (co-authored by Pilgrim), was republished in 2015 by Focal Press and now is availabe as an e-book.

Dale holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Communications from the University of Washington.

She attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University after she graduated from high school in Portland, Ore.

Dale has worked as a reporter and copyeditor or editor at daily newspapers in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellingham and has published numerous articles and stories. She also has done a range of public relations jobs, as well as editing and consulting. See her writings at CarolynDale.com.
